Emma Heseltine: Acorn lost a calf earlier this year. We hoped it wasn’t something wrong with her and sent her back to Jeremiah. She was in calf according to the vet and I worked out that she should be due on or around Christmas. I was hoping she wouldn’t calve on Christmas day as that would certainly put a bit of a spanner in my plans for the day!

Emma Heseltine: This weekend we are hosting the Northern Longhorn breeders herd competition lunch and AGM. The judge has a look at all the herds which have entered and gives prizes for different categories: best senior bull, best calf born this year, etc. We are not a herd that produces breeders, we produce beef, but it’s nice to enter anyway, and its certainly nice to have 30 Longhorn breeders over for lunch and a good old chin-wag.

Emma Heseltine: This week I’m getting a special treat, I’m heading to the Great Yorkshire Show with Nicky Luckett to give a hand with the cattle and learn a few things about showing.

Emma Heseltine: This morning I am given a reminder of why I love my job (as if I need one). Finally Helena has decided to have her calf, and thankfully I’m about to see it. She has picked her spot and is giving it a go.
