Food and farming activities for schools

We offer hands-on activities in your classroom for ages P2-S2. The workshops cover a range of topics, and the activities are led by a freelance education officer. A fee is charged for the service. You can choose from...

Food for Life

This is a one-day workshop for children ages P4-6. Through hands-on, small group activities children consider healthy eating, local, and organic food. The objectives are:

  • to understand more about where our food comes from.
  • to appreciate that there is a range of factors which influence our food choices.
  • to realise these choices have an impact on our health and the health of the environment.

The day finishes with a drama activity planned by the children.

From Farm to Fork

This workshop for P3-6 children is 60-75 minutes in length. During an introductory discussion, children are often surprised to discover the important links between soil and food. Through hands-on activities students consider some principles of sustainable farming and how such methods can help look after the planet’s natural resources and wildlife.
(Note: similar activities are part of the full day Food for Life workshop.)

Food Miles

In this 60-75 minute workshop P4 – S2 children find out how their food choices can affect the environment by investigating food packages to discover their countries of origin. They consider how the foods were transported to Scotland and why we eat foods from all over the world. Using maps and charts students find out just how far some foods have travelled. A discussion on environmental and social issues related to food miles concludes the activity.
(Note: this activity is part of the full day Food for Life workshop.)

Down on the Farm

Children ages P2 and P3 investigate where their food comes from – from soil, from plants and animals – from farms! Can you match the food photos to the living things they came from? Many farms keep animals, but what sorts of wildlife might also be found on farms? Using your sense of touch, can you guess the fruit and veg in the mystery bags? Allow 45 minutes for these activities designed to get your students thinking about farming and where their food comes from.

"I really enjoyed your talk and can’t wait to do something like that again!"

"I learnt that food comes from different animals."

What teachers say:

"Fitted in beautifully with the idea of giving children information and allowing them to make informed choices."

"I know that the staff and children really found the workshops you delivered to be very useful and we would love for you to come back."
