Brocklebys chicken and ham pieWe are farmers, butchers and pie makers. We farm Hebridean Sheep and Longhorn Cattle on the Nottinghamshire Leicestershire border near Melton Mowbray.

Can you give a short background to the winning product?

We make the world's only organic Melton Mowbray pork pie. We were asked by Abel & Cole to make an organic chicken and ham pie so we did. Our chicken and ham pie is hand made and baked free standing like our Melton Mowbray pork pies. We use flour from Whissendine Windmill in nearby Rutland, we cure our own ham from pigs reared at Oakley Grange Farm in  Hathern, Leicestershire (the same ones we use for our pork pies) and our chicken currently comes from Sheep Drove farm.

This pie has a succulent meaty texture infused with sage, the taste of the chicken contrasts nicely with the cured ham and the pastry adds a crunch! And not forgetting the jelly made from the pigs trotters which adds another porky dimension.

What does winning the award mean to you?

This is our third attempt at the awards and winning is most satisfying especially for this new product which we have recognised as excellent from day one. Hopefully this win will be good for our sales, our organic food production and so the support of our organic farmers.

What does organic mean to you?

Organic is about believing in, and subscribing to, certain principles, such as not relying on pesticides, fertilisers or routine use of drugs.  It’s about recognising the benefits of conservation and working with nature through encouraging wildlife on the farm. And it’s also about the health benefits - no GM, pesticides, and good animal husbandry... these things benefit our planet and ourselves.
