Stroud Brewery, established in 2006, celebrates the history, characters and great things that have come from Stroud and the Cotswolds. The brewery has a growing reputation for its premium cask ales and range of organic and vegan bottled beers, brewed with the use of Cotswold grown Maris Otter malting barley, which is widely acknowledged as the finest-quality brewing malt available. We source all of our malt through Warminster Maltings in Wiltshire, Britain’s oldest working floor maltings.

The maltings is owned by Robin Appel, a grain merchant, who trades with the farmers that grow the malting barley. Brewing beer from locally grown organic malt ensures that good practice is adopted from the field to the glass, and that the barley and hop crops grown are not reliant on inputs of fertilizer and pesticide derived from across the globe. This is good for our health and environment but also encourages barleys that are not too high in nitrogen which is ideal for brewing.

A short background on the winning product

Stroud brewery logoIn celebration of the barley variety it uses, Stroud Brewery launched its organic Maris Otter Vintage Ale 2011. At 7.5% ABV, this bottle conditioned, single malt, single hopped beer has been brewed using 100% Organic Maris Otter barley malt and English Organic First Gold hops giving this beer a balanced bitterness and spicy, orangey, fruity character.

The first crops of organic Maris Otter have been grown on Macaroni Farm, Eastleach, Nr. Cirencester, and malted by Warminster Maltings in Wiltshire, Britain’soldest working floor maltings. The malt is skilfully hand crafted using the same methods and tools employed for the last 150 years to produce a fine skinned crispy sweet malt.

What does organic mean to you?

More than ever we are aware of the wider impact of our lifestyle choices. The Soil Association define organic food as food that is produced using environmentally and animal friendly farming methods. They expand on this and describe four principles that underpin organic farming as: Health, Ecology, Fairness and Care. We believe this is a great basis for brewing the highest quality beer, being organic means we have:

  • The highest standards. Organic standards are the most rigorous of any food standard with a minimum one annual visit. The standards restrict the use of artificial fertilisers or pesticides, and no harmful additives and preservatives are added to products.
  • Our beer is better for the environment. Overall organic farming supports more farmland wildlife than non-organic farming. The UK government has said that it is better for wildlife, causes lower pollution and produces less carbon dioxide - the main global warming gas.
  • We are GM-free. Genetically modified (GM) crops and ingredients are not allowed under organic standards.
  • We trade ethically. Organic standards are not just about production, they also promote good practice in packaging, staff welfare, transport, and the information given to consumers.
