Molly Conisbee: Soil Association is going to be doing a couple of events at the Hay Festival this year – do come and join us if you happen to be there on 3 or 4 June. We’re going to be discussing how cities can feed themselves (with Andrew Simms from nef and Carolyn Steel, author of Hungry City); then President Monty Don will lead us in a discussion called (a bit flowery, but from the EF Schumacher quote) Health, Beauty, Permanence: What is farming for?

Global organic growth continues

Molly Conisbee: Organic farmers, food manufactureres, certifiers and enthusiasts from all over the world have gathered in Germany this week at the largest annual organic trade fair in the world. They are meeting in an unepxectedly positive atmosphere, as almost without exception they bring news of rapidly growing sales, despite the worst global recession for decades.

Small is beautiful?

Molly Conisbee: Hello, and welcome to my blog. I've been thinking a lot about E.F. Schumacher recently, with 2011 being the centenary of his birth. Schumacher certainly managed to squeeze a huge amount in to his 66 years (he died suddenly in 1977) - as well as being Chief Economist to the National Coal Board (remember that?!), he also wrote several books, including Small is Beautiful (listed by the TLS as one of the most influential post-War books to be published), A Guide for the Perplexed and This I believe - a collection of essays.
