The Handmade Bakery
This worker co-operative was set up as the first Community Supported Bakery in Britain, aiming to provide residents with organic artisan bread and re-skilling people in home-baking. Based in Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire, they make additive free, traditionally crafted and slowly fermented, delicious and nutritious bread made from organic and locally sourced ingredients. They offer a viable local alternative to industrially manufactured bread which helps address the concerns over food miles, bio-diversity, health and nutrition.
Colne Valley Charcuteria is out of the (chopping) blocks!
Tim Bennett, has launched Colne Valley Charcuteria. Tucked away in the back of the same mill as the Handmade Bakery, it's already producing some delicious artisan chorizo and maturing some other cured delights. Using Yorkshire free range pork from Tamworth and Gloucester Old Spot pigs raised in ancient beech woodland and organic or fair-trade herbs and spices. Some of the recipes come from family in Spain with others coming from much research and experimentation and have been adapted to suit the fine Colne Valley climate. He plans to introduce a similar Community Supported model to the one which so successfully helped start the Handmade Bakery by offering customers a monthly chorizo subscription.

Headingly Fowl Co-op, Leeds
Launched in 2008 by the Headingley Development Trust (HDT), the Headingley Fowl Co-op partners with Swillington Organic Farm, Leeds. The Co-op’s 30 members pay 6 months in advance and receive a monthly organic free range chicken which they collect from the Swillington stall at the Farmers' Market - also organised by HDT.

Hebden Bridge in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. A group of local residents are making local, organic vegetables more easily available in Hebden Bridge. Sourcing good quality produce as locally as possible, the HebVeg vegetables will come from an organic certified grower in Hipperholme near Halifax. To keep costs down there’s no home delivery – customers come and collect the box themselves from a town centre location (where it’s been packed by volunteers). “It’s all about getting good food in a way that is affordable for both us and the environment,” explains Ben Oubridge, one of HebVeg’s organisers. “We want to encourage low energy farming methods and minimise food transport by making it easier to get hold of organic produce that can be grown on our doorstep. Local and seasonal means you won’t pay through the nose for high quality.” The scheme will source vegetables from local growers while getting on with developing growing sites in and around Hebden Bridge. The aim is to produce everything in the box from within 3 miles of Hebden Bridge town centre within 3 years. Having thirty customers by the end of the year will enable the group to employ a grower and get on with growing their own produce as a fully fledged CSA.
Hemsworth Arts and Community College in Wakefield
The first school CSA started this spring. Hemsworth College has a small farm with 2 cattle, 3 pigs, ducks, laying hens, geese, turkey, goats, rabbits and a veg plot with a large, heated greenhouse. The CSA is being run within the Rural Studies dept, with support form Business Studies A-Level students. They already have 20 members signed up to pay £2 a week for 6 eggs and a share of vegetables. Horton Community Farm, Bradford

Kippax CSA, Leeds
Kippax CSA is a one acre market garden located just outside Ledston Luck Village in East Leeds. The scheme has been up and running since January 2009 and is coordinated by two growers, Louise Cartwright and Neal Stanley. The scheme produces vegetables, salad, herbs and fruit for 44 weeks of the year. The scheme is run using organic techniques and permaculture principles. Louise and Neal are eager to teach members about organic growing and host a variety of field days and social events in order to do this. The scheme is expanding and is currently looking for more members. Sherburn High School CSA
The CSA is run by a science technician at the school and makes use of the school's greenhouse and vegetable plot which is about 1/8th of an acre in total. TThey charge £18 for the school year, hold monthly work days, and each member takes something home at the end of the day. There are currently about 10 members. Rural Studies GCSE students alsocarry out work on the site between workdays.
Swillington CSA, Leeds
Our fruit and vegetable CSA is in its fourth year and currently supplies 30 shares. It is based in a 2 acre Victorian walled garden on Swillington Organic Farm, a 160-acre organic mixed livestock farm (www.swillingtonorganicfarm.co.uk). We have a team of growers, and enjoy working with our volunteers who come down to the garden on Fridays and Saturdays to learn new growing skills. Scarborough Shearling CSA Partnership
The Scarborough Shearling CSA has been operating since October 2009. Each member commits to purchase a whole shearling (a sheep aged between 17-24 months), which is delivered in eight monthly installments (October to March). The Swaledale sheep are traditionally reared on the North Yorkshire Moors by a cooperative of ten local farmers. Hazelhurst Fruitery and Hazelhurst CSA
Two new CSAs are being set up on 12 acres of land. Hazelhurst Fruitery and Hazelhurst CSA, a community smallholding. A community finance initiative is being set up to raise the money to secure the land for the smallholding which is being held for the Hazelhurst Community Supported Agriculture Co-operative.
Loxley Valley Community Farm, Sheffield
As a result of winning an Awards for All grant Loxley Valley Community Farm has been able to expand and purchase capital items. They increased the pig area and are growing enough veg for a weekly box and also producing chickens for eggs and meat. Newcomers to the farm are the geese replacing the Christmas turkeys from last year. They’ve faced a number of challenges such as coping with protesting neighbours, the theft of all their poultry, a failure in the water supply and losing a third of the geese to illness but they're carrying on with great fortitude and enthusiasm. More recently they’ve been given notice to vacate their land, but have managed to secure a new site by buying a plot of land that came up for auction. Not ideal, it is self seeded wood/scrubland and will need a lot of work, but it is theirs and plans are afoot to create a design for their new vegetable plots and animal pens. The land ownership is a separate venture; the farm will have the right to buy the land if it can raise the money in the future therefore they are effectively holding it on behalf of the farm and in the meantime the farm will rent the land on a long term lease putting them in a much better position than previously. "Despite the challenges the group claim to have had a fantastic year, enjoyed some great food and made some lifelong friends in the process. Social events are held regularly for members, volunteers and friends with great BBQs, bonfire night celebrations and a mushroom and foraging walk being held over the past few months". 30 members rent a 6.5 acre field near Sheffield, and are working together producing vegetables, pigs, chickens, eggs and geese.
