How the Soil Association supported the development of CSA

The Soil Association was part of a partnership programme called Making Local Food Work funded by the Big Lottery Fund from September 2007 to March 2012.

The Soil Association team helped to support communities and farmers to set up new CSAs and to support the development of a CSA network.  In addition they helped communities to establish buying groups in order to bulk purchase more fresh seasonal organic produce direct from the farm and explored the range and potential for larger buying groups using overseas models.

Support was provided through a team of regional coordinators providing direct advice and expertise to groups and farmers; training days, networking events, mentoring, study visits and a national conference; technical information including an action manual, and a comprehensive website.

As of March 2012 there are over 80 CSA projects operating successfully in the UK and the number continues to grow.
