12 December 2011 15:25 - 12 December 2011 16:00
Farmers and landowners will have the chance to find out how to cut fuel and energy costs at a series of workshops being held this winter across East Anglia.
The workshops, run by Groundwork East of England with support from NFU East Anglia and the Environment Agency, will also help farmers and landowners to ‘future proof’ their businesses against environmental change.
With fuel and energy prices escalating and buyers demanding ever higher environmental standards, resource efficiency is becoming a key part of farm business planning. The workshops will examine the financial and carbon costs of on-farm energy use and provide a range of practical and proven measures to reduce them.
They will cover energy management, carbon footprinting and benchmarking as well as improving energy efficiency and reducing costs for:
• lighting
• heating
• grain drying
• motors and pumps
• fuel consumption
The workshops will also provide an overview of the measures that farmers can take to minimise the threats and take advantage of the opportunities offered by climate change, specifically relating to:
• Resistance to drought
• Preparation for extreme weather events and
• New market opportunities
On completing the workshop, delegates will be able to calculate their own farm carbon footprint and energy spend, prioritise their energy saving actions and start preparing plans to adapt to a changing climate.
Throughout the workshops, reference will be made to sources of further expert information, advice and opportunities for funding, all of which will be provided in a delegate pack.
The workshops will be free to NFU members with a cost to non- members of £20.
