Future Growers traineeship in west Wales

14 January 2013

We are able to offer a 6 month traineeship for the summer on our organic farm at Nantclyd, west Wales. We need someone happy to work on their own and with others on a 30 acre organically-run holding with hens, pullets, sheep, horses, mixed vegetables, plant raising, soft fruit and polytunnels.

The work involves planting, weeding, harvesting of veg and fruit, milling and mixing feed, working with livestock and general farm work. This is all hard physical work, outdoor all weathers all year round. The position is available now with a 1 month trial period.

No smokers or dogs allowed and the applicant needs to have experience of volunteering/working on a farm.

There is caravan accommodation. Your own transport is essential as the farm is isolated: 3 miles from the nearest village Llanilar and 7 miles from Aberystwyth.

Pigs...

Emma Heseltine: This week I’m taking my last two pigs to the abattoir. I’m sure it’s going to be just as sad as the last time, but this time I’m hoping they are bigger and so provide more delicious food than the previous one. My mistake last time was not to weigh my pig so this time I’m getting it organised. John and I fetch the lamb weigher over from Wallace Field and get them in the pens. As the pigs have been moved a couple of times now they are quite used to getting in the trailer for a little ride, its not difficult with a bit of a treat (a couple of carrots).
