Lake House Farm near Salisbury is seeking a general farm worker available to start in February 2013. The Soil Association organic and Demeter farm (200 acres) comprises of a dairy herd, White Park suckler cows, Wiltshire Horn sheep, rare breed pigs, layers, meat birds and turkeys. Arable crops including wheat and oats are grown, BD preps are all made on-farm and we also apply compost teas. We also host regular school visits between March and September. The estate also has a small kitchen garden, horses and a stocked lake.

The potential applicant would be the only other full-time member of staff apart from the Farm Manager so would be able to and encouraged to take an active hands-on role in all the farm enterprises. Including all types of livestock work, tractor and loader operations, processing of farm products, BD prep work, compost tea application and helping with educational visits.

On-farm accommodation is available in the form of a 1-bedroom cottage flat and agricultural wages would be paid. As we are a predominately livestock farm some weekend work would be required. Also during busy times such as harvest and lambing, extra hours may need to be worked.

When the north wind doth blow...

Margaret Finlay: It’s not just dairy cattle here at Rainton, we also have a flock of about 500 sheep, mostly Scotch Mule ewes - a cross between a Scottish Blackface ewe and a Blue Faced Leicester tup. The crossbred ewe is supposed to embody the best bits of the each breed - hardiness and good natural mothering, and prolificness with good milk production respectively. The southwest of Scotland where the farm is located, is generally accepted to have a ‘maritime’ climate, with cool summers and mild winters - warmer and wetter than the east is a common description. Not this March.
