Alan Brown, Millairies, Sorbie, Newton Stewart, DG8 8AL

Farm Backgroud: 250 acres of Beef and sheep (including sheep milk cheesemaking). Millairies is a mixed beef and milking sheep farm, where we grow some crops to feed the calves and sheep. We turn all our milk into cheese on farm and buy in some organic cows milk and some goats milk. The farm now produces as much as it did before it was organic in the 90's.We have been using local rock dust to remineralise and adding to our dung to help produce a compost with added value. Our new project for 2013 includes two wind tubines linked to local community. For more information, please visit our website: www.gallowayfarmhousecheese.co.uk

When the north wind doth blow...

Margaret Finlay: It’s not just dairy cattle here at Rainton, we also have a flock of about 500 sheep, mostly Scotch Mule ewes - a cross between a Scottish Blackface ewe and a Blue Faced Leicester tup. The crossbred ewe is supposed to embody the best bits of the each breed - hardiness and good natural mothering, and prolificness with good milk production respectively. The southwest of Scotland where the farm is located, is generally accepted to have a ‘maritime’ climate, with cool summers and mild winters - warmer and wetter than the east is a common description. Not this March.
