Investing in innovation: when farmers drive R&D

The Soil Association is hosting a fringe event at the Oxford Farming Conference  which is free to attend. Speakers include Prof Charles Godfray. This is one of several fringe events held at the Examinations School between 16:00 and 18:00

The Soil Association supports innovation by and for farmers across the UK through the Duchy Originals Future Farming Programme. Farmers are in the driving seat in the programme's 'field labs' and research fund, setting R&D priorities and testing how new approaches work on the ground. The programme helps organic and non-organic farmers share best practice.

Succeed with seed with selection perfection

Ben Raskin: One of the keys to saving your own seed is the 'selection', or identifying the best of your plants to keep the seed from. If you are aiming to 'maintain' a variety, in other words to keep it as close as possible to the original genetics of that variety, then there will be specific traits you will need to keep (colour, height, pest or disease resistance for instance). Most of just want to ensure the selection performs well in our garden or farm.
