Do you allow the use of can linings such as bisphenol A?

We do permit can linings and at the moment and do not prohibit bisphenol A in the standards. The criticism surrounding bisphenol A is certainly something we are aware of. The issue has been thoroughly discussed as part of the packaging working group.

Packaging and the various ingredients that are used constitute a huge, complex and highly technical area. We are aware that a number of plasticises and other materials are controversial but almost all forms of packaging have their potential drawbacks. For instance glass jars may be ok, but they are usually closed with caps that also contain certain chemicals. So whilst we are committed to providing clear information to consumers, our current position is that we do not feel we can reach a judgement either on labelling or on prohibiting certain substances without sufficient in-depth research and we just do not have the resources to do so.
