Farm Walk: Higher Farm, Devon

14 August 2013 16:30 - 14 August 2013 19:30

Michael Rogers, Underwood, Higher  Farm, Beeson, Kingsbridge,TQ72HW

Farm Background: The farm comprises of 160 acres, all in Higher Level Stewardship. We farm a beef suckler herd and some winter field vegetables. We are into the second year of developing a 1.5 acre forest garden together with a further 1.5 acres of alley cropping. Over the last few years, I have been actively trying to make our hedges more productive by adding trees suitable for coppicing for logs and we are also planting trees for fruit production in the hedgerows and moving the fences 2 metres out from the hedges. We also planted a new 200 metre hedge just with trees which have either an edible or medicinal uses, finally we planted a small nut orchard in 2010. These elements are for our own interest and also used for innovative based farm walks. Please visit www.underwooddiscoverycentre.com for more information. Experimental work carried out under our 'Discover Forest Foods' project is best followed atwww.treesforhealth.org
