Seeking Standards Committee Chair

14 February 2011

We are looking to appoint a chair for our Processing Standards Committee.

This role is a unique opportunity to be involved in the strategic and technical direction of Soil Association standards for food processing. The chair will lead the committee in making recommendations for changes to the standards, in line with organic principles and the aims of the Soil Association. This also takes into account improvements in technology, advances in understanding and regulation changes, whilst balancing consumer expectations and impacts on all stakeholders.

Applicants will need to have:

  • empathy with our aims and objectives
  • good experience of the (organic) food manufacturing sector
  • authority within, or be able to win the trust of, the sector from which you come
  • experience of chairing meetings and reaching collective decisions
  • the ability to assess technical information from other disciplines.
The appointed chair will need to set aside their own particular interest - chairs and members join our standards committees as individuals not as representatives of a company or other interest.

The committee meets around two or three times a year and has occasional discussion via email and conference call. The chair will also be required to attend the Standards Board, around three times a year, as a representative of the Processing Standards Committee. This is an unpaid post, however travel expenses will be reimbursed - meetings are usually held in Bristol or London.

For more information visit our Standards Committee pages. Applicants can send their CV and a covering letter to Isabel Griffiths, Standards Manager igriffiths@soilassociation.org

The closing date for applications is 15 February 2011.

The future of food and farming is in the balance.

We urgently need additional funding to promote fairer, greener approaches to science and innovation.

We need to show how this can work in practice, and lobby government to gain farmers and the public a real voice in the research that is done in their name.
