Jeanette Orrey awarded MBE

31 December 2011

Jeanette Orrey, school meals policy advisor for the Food for Life Partnership, was awarded with an MBE in this year's honours for services to food in schools.

Libby Grundy, co-director of the Food for Life Partnership said, "Jeanette's tireless campaigning on the issue of school food has brought about transformational change in thousands of schools across the country. Jeanette has played an integral role in shaping the Food for Life Parternship programme and this well-deserved award highlights the importance of healthy school lunches. Evaluation of the partnership shows that school food provides a vital way to reduce the health and academic gap between disadvantaged children and their peers. We must make sure this work continues."

Jeanette Orrey said, "I would like to thank all the Food for Life Partnership schools and staff because without your support and hard work my MBE would not have been possible. I feel very privileged to receive this honour and I will collect it on behalf of us all."

Jeanette, who is also credited with inspiring Jamie Oliver's school food campaign, is one of the UK's most well known, widely respected and inspirational experts on school food policy - and she was a dinner lady for over 20 years.

The future of food and farming is in the balance.

We urgently need additional funding to promote fairer, greener approaches to science and innovation.

We need to show how this can work in practice, and lobby government to gain farmers and the public a real voice in the research that is done in their name.
