OMSCo announces £¾m additional farm payment
14 June 2010
The organic milk suppliers co-op (OMSCo) has today written to members confirming an additional payment to its 400 members totalling £750,000 for the 2009-2010 milk year.
"This is a welcome boost to organic farm incomes, in what has been a difficult year for producers," says Nicholas Saphir, OMSCo's executive chairman. "However, with continued demand growth and supplies tightening, we are quietly confident that trading conditions will continue to improve.”
The additional payment relates to a surplus on trading activities achieved in the last half of the year, and represents an additional payment in the region of £1,900 per farm. OMSCo state that the payment is the result of the solid commercial progress made in the second half of the year, with underlying sales growth of around 10%.
Phil Stocker, the Soil Association's director of farmer and grower relations, welcomed the announcement: "The fact that OMSCo are reporting market stability and growth reflects our predictions in this year's Organic Market Report. But this payment is also a positive reflection of the OMSCo structure, which clearly has producers' interests at heart."
