Superweeds in Nebraska: the case for GM-free farming on the BBC

19 September 2012

Don’t miss this important news story on the BBC’s Today programme which vividly illustrates the case against GM crops.

In Nebraska, Monsanto’s GM corn - developed to be Roundup-resistant to allow for herbicide spraying - has led to the development of herbicide-resistant "superweeds". The chemical industry's solution has been to develop a new GM crop which will be resistant to being sprayed with 2,4-D (the powerful weed killer which was a component of the Agent Orange defoliant). An alternative solution, referrred to in the programme: organic farming practices, such as the latest weeding technologies, cover crops, undersowing and crop rotation.
