Sun Hive Workshop
Starts: 28 September 2013 09:00
Ends: 29 September 2013 17:00
Rachel Carson Centre (in the grounds of Emerson College), Forest Row, East Sussex RH18 5JX
The Sun Hive (Weissenseifener Haengekorb) forms the core of the Natural Beekeeping Trust's commitment to bee guardianship.
Based on an ingenious combination of skep baskets made of rye straw and wooden support structures, the hive is intended to be installed at a height of at least 2.5 metres (8 feet). The shape of the hive harmonises with the movement gesture of the bee colony and enables the bees to design their brood nests according to their own innate criteria. The hive was designed by German sculptor Guenther Mancke, and represents the fruits of many years of research into the nature of the honeybee colony.
The workshop will take place over two days on and will involve weaving the straw skep baskets which are built to precise measurements. The wooden hoop frames and support structures will be available ready-made and may be purchased separately at a cost of £100. The programme will also include a talk about the ideas underlying the Sun Hive and an optional brief visit to hives already inhabited.
Cost: £140 including organic lunch and homemade refreshments. Please note that this is an 'external' workshop and as such the 20% Friends discount does not apply.
