Orchard Day at Highland Folk Museum
15 October 2013
We had a very successful turn out for the Orchard Day event run at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore, with over 170 people attending to enjoy the cookery demonstrations by our local chefs Lydie Bocquillon of Auld Alliance in Kingussie and Kirsten of Mountain Cafe in Aviemore. Margaret and Andrew Lear of Plants and Apples provided very informative discussions about Heritage type apples and orchard care and maintenance as well as a complete demonstration of apple pressing and samples of freshly squeezed apple juice. There was also the delights of the hog roast provided by Taste of Moray.
It was a very enjoyable afternoon and wonderful to see the first apple trees of our Cairngorms Anniversary Orchards planted. This has launched the next phase of the project where we will now determine which sites from the so far received 17 nominations will be best suited to receive an Anniversary Orchard. The deadline for nominations is the 14th of October so once this is past we will begin site selections and endeavour to begin planting the selected sites by November.
