Twenty four years ago, Keith Abel started selling potatoes door-to-door with his mum, and his friend Paul Cole. Abel & Cole has grown over the years with the demand for seasonal organic produce. Now an online business, they are committed to offering customers an online, ethical and organic alternative to supermarket shopping.
They think carefully about everything they do: buying as much as possible from UK farms; ensuring that all growers get a fair price; making environmentally responsible choices in every element of the business, and striving to provide customers with excellent service.
They work with farmers to plan crops and products, offering agreed prices in advance when they wish, in order to provide security for both customers and the farmers. These long-term relationships give access to superb quality and variety at good prices.
A short background to the winning product
Adrian Izzard has been supplying Abel & Cole with fantastic salad crops and unusual vegetables for years. In Adrian’s own words: “We grow lots of different crops and we keep trying new things every year. You need to not just have organic but also interesting produce.
I’ve been looking for the seeds for this variety of aubergine for a long time, it took me a long time to track them down. We grew it as a trial last year, and then went on to grow a lot more this year. We grow four different varieties of aubergine, and I think this is the nicest one. They’ve a lovely white flesh so there’s a beautiful distinction when you cut them open, and they’ve been great roasted on the barbecue.”
Our judges add that this excellent aubergine has an ‘amazing appearance’ an ‘excellent flavour’ and cooks well.
What does organic mean to you?
Abel & Cole say “we’ve been organic for 24 years and never looked back. To us, it means working in a way that is mindful to provenance, farmers, sustainability, customers, the environment and health. Having high ethical standards in all aspects of our business is important to us, and is something that the organic mindset encompasses completely.”
