Canton Tea Co is an independent British tea company trading in high grade, whole leaf tea. It was founded by Jennifer Wood in 2007 when she determined to bring decent loose leaf tea back into the UK. Jennifer had lived in Hong Kong as a child so she was primed from an early age to love Chinese tea.
Canton Tea Co has evolved from a kitchen start-up to a serious player in the speciality tea market with a global reach in just five years. They buy seasonally, direct from small, artisan farms so they know the provenance of the teas and the conditions under which they are grown, picked and processed. They have extended the range to include loose leaf teas from China, Taiwan, India and Japan as well as organic herbals, Teaware and the biodegradable teabag range: Canton Tea Pyramids.
A short background to the winning product
Canton Tea Co. say ‘We created our Organic Canton Karma for the Thali Café in Bristol, who asked us for a blend based on Ayurvedic principles - the traditional Indian system of herbal remedies. Our objective was to create a calming blend that looked prettier and tasted better than any other comparative blend.
After intense research on the key ingredients of Ayurvedic teas, we spent weeks adjusting the proportions of each to develop the depth and character of a unique organic blend that provides a sensational warming kick yet at the same time is calming and caffeine-free.
The mix of Ginger, Fennel Seeds, whole Cardamom pods, Liquorice root, whole Rosebuds and Vanilla tastes so good that we branded it a Canton blend, called it Canton Karma and added it to the herbal teas on our website.
What does organic mean to you?
We choose to be organic because we recognise that the Soil Association Certification carries a powerful reassurance for some of our customers.
We are careful to source all our teas from gardens and farms that follow organic principles and though not all of them are certified, these small family run farms have been growing teas in the traditional way for many years – often centuries.
Having the organic label is shorthand for safety, valuing biodiversity and recognises responsible farmers who reduce the impact of their farming practices on the natural environment.’
