Visit an organic farm

Beechenhill, Derbyshire

Beechenhill is a 37-hectare organic farm situated above the beautiful Dove Dale at the southern end of the Peak District National Park. The farm has a herd of dairy cows, a flock of sheep and has diversified into holiday accommodation. Visit the farm to enjoy the beautiful scenery and find out more about life on the farm.

Landscape

Beechenhill lies on the south face of the hill between the Dovedale gorge and the Manifold Valley. The river valleys are deeply cut into carboniferous mountain limestone. The Dove, forming the county boundary between Staffordshire and Derbyshire, tumbles through a narrow, steep sided valley with precipitous rock faces and steep wooded and grassy slopes. The farm has small fields bounded by dry stone walls - a distinctive feature of the area.

Organic livestock

The farm has a herd of 30 Freisian cows that are milked twice a day. The milk is sold to the Organic Milk Suppliers Co-operative (OMSCO) to be bottled or processed into butter, yoghurt or cheese. The flock of sheep rear their lambs slowly on the herb and clover-rich meadows. Meat is available direct from the farm and details can be found on the Beechenhill website.

Wildlife

The farm has wonderful displays of cowslips, early purple orchids, harebells and many other beautiful flowers and herbs on the lower slopes. Bird surveys have found curlews, skylarks and linnets on the farm with upland species including whinchat and wheatear. Hares are regularly seen in the fields.

Accommodation

The farm has two holiday cottages and also offers bed and breakfast. Why not relax in the cottages or be pampered in the bed and breakfast. Wake up to the sight of cows ambling past the window or the scent of fresh bread. Step out of the hectic, bustle of modern life and recharge your batteries in the heart of the Peak District National Park.

Visitors

People have lived and farmed at Beechenhill since earliest times, indeed there is a prehistoric farmstead on our lower fields. There is a feeling of history and continuity here and we delight in sharing our environment with our guests. There is a farm trail to enable guests to fully explore the farm. A range of school visits are held during the year with the National Trust and Peak District National Park.
