Collings Hanger Farm, Buckinghamshire
This 148 hectare farm is situated in the beautiful Chiltern Hills. It has been run by the same family since 1923 when Wren Davis bought Collings Hanger Farm and Stoney Green Farm. The farm has a herd of organic suckler cows and grows ancient varieties of wheat for milling into flour (not currently certified as organic). Turkeys are reared for the Christmas market but these are not currently certified as organic.
The farm has a herd of suckler cows that rear their young on the organic pastures. The calves suckler their mothers until weaning and are then sold as 'stores' for fattening for beef.
The farm is managed under a Countryside Stewardship Scheme which involves the hedgerows being restored and the old orchard being restocked with traditional varieties of apples, cherries, pears and plums. A new pond has been dug and the parkland replenished with suitable trees. The chalk-grassland is grazed sensitively and the farm is the only Buckinghamshire site of the plant Corky-Fruited Water Dropwort.
Groups are welcome to visit the farm by appointment. Hand washing and toilets are available and there is a covered area available in the barn if it is wet. The farm also hosts the local steam rally and firework party.
