Visit an organic farm

Upper Wick Farm, Worcestershire

Upper Wick Farm is a 100 hectare farm lying in the beautiful Teme valley in Worcestershire, minutes from Worcester city itself. The farm has beef cattle and sheep together with a farm shop, traditional orchards, cereals and potatoes. Visit the farm to discover more.

Organic livestock

The farm fattens beef cattle from Wales which graze the organic pastures in the summer and are fed home-grown cereals and silage in the winter. A flock of 250 Suffolk cross ewes are kept, giving birth to their lambs in early spring. The farm has 200 Black Rock laying hens and other chickens which are reared as table birds. Meat produced on the farm is available in the farm shop, 'Roots at Rushwick'.

Orchards, parkland and crops

The farm has some old orchards growing local varieties of cherry, often frequented by green woodpeckers. An area of parkland boasts some fantastic specimen trees and a 'ha ha' – a steep sided ditch to keep livestock straying without the need for a hedge or fence. The farm also grows wheat, barley, oats and potatoes in rotation with grass and clover.

River Teme and wildflower meadows

The farm is bordered by the beautiful River Teme, a site of special scientific interest due to the wealth of wildlife it supports. Much of the farm is low-lying river meadows, a flood plain when the river bursts its banks at least once a year. These meadows are permanent pasture which have never been ploughed and have a host of wildflowers including lady’s smock and cowslips. Herons and kingfishers can be seen here.

The farm has a rich bird population including a family of buzzards, little owls, tawny owls and barn owls. These birds of prey are at the top of the food chain so they reflect how the organic farming methods are conserving wildlife on the farm.

Holiday accomodation

A small self contained holiday cottage is available with views across the orchard. Home grown prepared meals are available using organic ingredients.

Farm shop, events and visits

The farm shop, Roots at Rushwick is situated just off the bypass south of Worcester. A range of organic and local produce is available here, including beef, lamb and vegetables from the farm. The farm aims to hold a number of guided walks together with some feature events to celebrate the farming calendar. Please contact the farm for more information.
