The Organic Action Plan for this region will be launched soon.
Greater London is made up of 32 boroughs and the City of London, which cover an area of 1,572 km2. By size, it is the smallest of the English regions, representing just 1.2% of the total land area of England. However, it has a population of approximately 7.4 million, which represents almost 15% of the population of England. There are 12,064ha of farmland in Greater London, accounting for approximately 8% of London's land area. In comparison, farmland in the Southeast accounts for 62% of the region's land area and in England as a whole, 81%.

There are 472 registered holdings located mainly in Bromley (30%); Havering (24%); Hillingdon (13%); Enfield (12%) and Barnet (6%). Most of these units are small and cover an area of 5ha or less and are primarily used for the production of arable and horticultural crops. Farming in London contributes around 0.25% of London's GDP and accounts for only 0.03% of London's total workforce.

In terms of organic significance, organic land accounts for 490ha (0.8%) of a total of 631,144ha in the UK (Defra, 2006). The region also has five organic producers out of a total of 4,343 in the UK as a whole, and 185 of the 2,135 UK organic processors (Defra 2006).
