Biofach 2003 - news from the World Organic Trade Fair

This year’s event, once again, saw more visitors than ever, with approximately 29,500 trade attendees to a snowy Exhibition Centre in Nuremberg between 13-16 February 2003.

A full array of international organic products were displayed by almost 2,000 exhibitors, up three per cent from last year. Renate Künast, federal minister for Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture, noted during the opening ceremony that "the organic market is growing steadily, organic products have a future throughout the world".

The Soil Association sponsored British Organic Pavilion provided UK manufacturers a fantastic opportunity to show a strong presence at this international event, with exhibitors experiencing a high throughput of good quality enquiries.

Soil Association Certification Ltd (SA Cert) was particularly pleased to launch their new set of standards for the textile industry. These new standards, launched at a well attended and lively seminar will afford companies a unique status in the market place amongst other products which currently have unsubstantiated or questionable organic claims. These new standards cover skins and leather, wool, cotton, linen and hemp textile products. The certification scheme will be available for companies in March 2003.

William Lana of Green fibres said "We believe that certification to the SA Standards will add additional credibility to our extensive organic range. And as strong supporters of the Soil Association’s work in raising public awareness of the benefits of organic production, we need look no further than the Soil Association for symbol endorsement that our customers both demand and trust".

We hope that all those who exhibited with us or those who visited the show had a worthwhile and profitable excursion and will be keen to join us at Biofach 2004.

If you would like more information on Biofach 2003, or would like to register interest in exhibiting with us at Biofach 2004, please contact Richard Van de Peer at the Soil Association on 0117 914 2432 or email, rvandepeer@soilassociation.org
