UK organic retail market growth

Why go organic?

Today the organic food market is worth nearly £2 billion in the UK alone, a figure that is increasing daily. Over the last decade, the market has enjoyed the highest level of consistent growth, with over two thirds of consumers knowingly bought organic products.

Organically managed land now accounts for 3.5% of the UK's total agricultural land and with such an increase in direct sales. And with increasing numbers of consumers buying direct from the producer, through farmer’s markets, box schemes, mail order and farm shops, it's easy to see why more farmers and growers are taking advantage of the growing market.

Consumers are also using their spending power to drive the organic health and beauty market forward, choosing products free from parabens, phthalates and GM ingredients. To date, there are over 1,700 different Soil Association certified organic beauty products on the market.

The organic textiles market is also blossoming, with more high street stores choosing to stock garments made from organically certified material to meet rising demand and attract new customers. The UK market is estimated to be worth over £100 million and retail sales of organic cotton are expected to grow by over 115% in 2008.
