Vinceremos Wines

For their Malbec Caligiore

Company profile

Malbec Caligiore from Vinceremos WinesVinceremos is the UK's longest established specialist importer of organic wines, trading since 1985, listing over 300 organic wines from around the world. "We are passionate about organic as we believe this form of viticulture is the most sustainable approach, relying as it does on soil health and natural equilibrium in the vineyard. We also feel it helps give rise to the purest expression of a terroir. You could say we feel it is the 'right' way to grow grapes and make wine.

We'd like consumers to take away the message that organic wines offer excellent value for money; the quality is now consistently high and in consuming them customers are usually supporting small and enthusiastic producers who take enormous pride in their craft and enormous care of their land as well as producing delicious wines.” said Managing Director Jem Gardener.

What does winning the award mean to you?

We are delighted to win this award again – most of all as an acknowledgement of the dedication of Gustavo Caligiore and his team in Lujan de Cuyo, Argentina. This genuinely family operation produces artisan wines near Mendoza, in the shadow of the Andes. The family originates from Southern Italy and settled in Argentina before World War One. Their award winning Malbec 2009 is made with grapes grown on 80 year old vines.

Can you give a short background to the winning product?

In the winery, a minimalist (indigenous yeasts, no additives, etc.) and organic winemaking approach is employed. "Our main goal is get a tiny piece of Mendoza though the grape and into every single bottle" says Gustavo. He is the third generation of the family to tend the vines and took the leap of making his own wines in 2001. Previously the grapes had been sold to other, larger producers.

"We aim to make highly concentrated wines, where the personality of the grapes and the land are given full expression. The company philosophy is 'The soul of the land made into wine'" says Gustavo. "The whole team is extremely proud to win this prize because it means that our hard work over many years has been recognised. At the same time it's also a tribute to my mum Norma who was a very committed and enthusiastic woman promoting organic farming in Mendoza. With her strong spirit she led each of us at Caligiore through some difficult times".
