Pupils from Pooles Park PrimaryThe judges chose a school where organic growing is taking the community by storm - Pooles Park is a Primary in central London, with their 'Global Food Garden'.

The judges loved the emphasis on cooking and growing interesting food, at home as well as at school. Pooles Park are sharing their learning with other schools - over 200 children and staff were given tours of the garden and took part in seed sowing workshops. They also hold Saturday volunteer events, which enables people from the local community to take part in organic food growing and related activities. They often fire up the Cob Oven and cook pizzas with seasonal toppings for their helpers, using herbs and veg from the garden of course!

On top of this, the school runs regular and free training workshops for parents and people from the local and wider community making edible window boxes and hanging baskets. There are four plots in the garden which are 'leased' each year, free of charge, to families of children at school without gardens at home.

Greg Crawford, Head Teacher said "We passionately believe in the importance of children learning where their food comes from and growing food themselves. Not only do the pupils now grow food that goes into the school kitchen, but there are children growing salad on their balconies in flats across Islington. They have a real sense of pride in their school garden and new skills, the whole school is so excited to have received this national award from the Soil Association."

As part of their prize two pupils, Ruby and Alexia, were invited to join an expert panel of food critics, restaurateurs, broadcasters and chefs for the blind tasting of the Organic Food Awards judging. We'd like to thank the girls for their thoughtful contributions to the judging; this was the first time children have been included in the expert panel and they helped to judge the bread and the fruit and vegetables.

Alexia Soteriadou aged 10, Plant Manager at Pooles Park loved the judging experience. "It’s really amazing to be a judge. It was really fun because you can taste different types of bread and say your own opinions to the judges of what you like and dislike."
