Why certify with us?
Unlike organic food, there is currently no legislation for organic cosmetics
This means that ANYONE can make an organic claim, no matter how the product was made and how much organic material it actually contains. For example, the product could be 1% organic and contain a number of ingredients which we would not permit but could still be labelled as ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ in its branding.
This is both misleading to consumers and damaging to the organic industry, putting the hard work and clever formulations that genuine organic brands develop at risk.
We think it’s time greenwashing stopped that’s why we created our standard and why we also Campaign for Clarity.
The skin is our body's largest organ and much of what we put on it is likely to be absorbed into our blood stream.
Non-organic health and beauty products on the market have been known to contain toxic ingredients and non-biodegradable chemicals which may have a negative impact on human health - so it’s no surprise that beauty brands are choosing to go organic - providing us with a safer alternative. However genuine organic and natural brands without certification are in the same playing field as potentially disingenuous brands that green wash consumers - we think it's time this stopped.
