Silver and gold standards consultation
Thanks to everyone who provided feedback in the silver and gold standards consultation before Christmas.
The response was phenomenal – more people than ever before told us their thoughts on proposed changes to the Catering Mark standards for Making healthy eating easy, avoiding or using more sustainable palm oil and rewarding caterers who serve fairly traded and organic drinks.
A consultation is just that – a chance for you to tell us what you think about our proposals for changes to the standards. We really value your views and have taken them into account in the final proposals which are now being approved. All of our standards are scrutinised by our expert Catering Mark Standards Committee then our Standards Board with final sign-off from the Soil Association Board of Trustees.
We’re now doing some detailed testing to ensure the transition to the new standards is as smooth as possible. Some caterers told us they were worried that we were making the standards harder. That’s not the case – we want all caterers who are at silver or gold to retain the same status – the aim is to bring the rewards for Making healthy eating easy more into line with public health priorities. The additional points for avoiding or using more sustainable palm oil and serving fairly traded and organic drinks will also bring more flexibility.
There’s no need for you to change your menus just yet – the new standards will be launched later in the spring, with a suitable lead-in period for you to make any changes before you need to meet them. We’ll let all caterers know about this through Catering Mark enews, so keep an eye on your inbox.
