United Arab Emirates
Reports from 2014 suggest the organic food market of the UAE is booming, with domestic supply unable to meet the growing demand. Fresh produce, dairy and other processed products are therefore being imported.
In 2015 fifty organic farms were listed in the UAE, but no domestically certified importers, exporters or processors. Local farms reportedly marketed over 700 tons of organic food in 2015.
Consumer Preferences & Channels
Organic fish, fruits, and chocolates are the most commonly consumed organic foods in the UAE.
The main motivations for choosing organic foods are given as health and environmental awareness. Young people have the highest awareness of organic food and the consumption of organic foods is marketed as a new, trendy, high status lifestyle.
Cost, availability, shelf life, taste, and a lack of knowledge are given as the main factors that limit the consumption of organic foods.
Organic food sold in the United Arab Emirates must be certified by an approved certification organization. For local goods, that means certification by the federal Emirates Authority for Standards and Metrology (ESMA). Imported products must meet Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) rules and be certified by a ministry approved certifier. Organic imports that are not certified will be stopped at port.
Ministerial Decree No. 768 for 2014 is available in Arabic. Fibl provide contact details for MOEW.
