Total U.S. organic product sales in 2016 reached nearly $47 billion. Organic has averaged double-digit growth over the last five years and according to the OTA , represents grew at over 8.3%. Organic currently represents 5.3% of all retail food sales in the U.S.
Consumer Preferences & Channels
82% of consumers bought more organic than in 2016. 13.6 percent of all fruits and vegetables and 8% of all dairy products bought by U.S. consumers are organic. Organic options are now offered in 75 percent of all categories on supermarket shelves. (SPINS Consumer Insights )
An organic products equivalence agreement between the US and EU came into force in 2012. The majority of UK - EU certified organic food products (provided they are free from livestock ingredients) can enter the US market without additional certification. There are some minor additional labelling requirements for >95% organic products (e.g. to state the name of the certifier rather than use just their logo or code) which have the option to apply the USDA seal.
PWAB (Produced Without Antibiotics) additional supply chain checks and accrediation are needed to export of organic livestock products to the US.
