Should all dairy cows have access to a deep bed?
Modern dairy housing systems have changed dramatically in recent years, as have the genetics of many dairy cows. At one time restricted bedding straight onto concrete cubicles was considered acceptable, but a range of studies have now shown this adversely affects cow welfare. This webinar will run through the evidence that a deep bed is preferable to cow and dairy farmer. It will run through some of the options for achieving a deep bed, highlighting the pros and cons of various systems. Inevitably there is no perfect bedding system (yet), but making some fundamental changes to cow bed comfort invariably results in a wide range of improvements which will be discussed. Consideration of the broader context will be given to specific animal needs (do all breeds or ages benefit) and a range of production system demands (do more intensive systems require greater comfort?)
