St Jerome's Field : Land Trust case study : Soil Association

St Jerome's Field, Perthshire

In 2010 an eight acre field in the village of Dunkeld in Perthshire, Scotland was gifted to the Soil Association Land Trust.

The owner of the field wanted to ensure it was saved from development and returned to organic food production. The idea of establishing a community growing project on the land was presented to the village in a public meeting. Over the next year and a half local people came together and established a group, now called @ The Field (Dunkeld and Birnam Community Growing) who began working on the field. Their aim is to bring the community together to grow food organically for local consumption.

Together they raised money to fence the field from rabbits and deer, erect a polytunnel and shed and now have an acre under cultivation. Regular events have brought people up to the field and there is now a committed team of regular workers who celebrated their first year of vegetable production with a tattie fest attended by over 200 people. The group plans to plant 400 wild harvest trees for biodiversity and a small orchard and soft fruit area over the coming winter.
