Organic heroes nominated for Radio 4 Food & Farming Awards

21 November 2011

The Soil Association led Food for Life Partnership, the lottery funded network of schools and communities across England committed to transforming food culture, has been nominated for the prestigious Derek Cooper award in the up and coming BBC Radio 4 Food & Farming Awards. Named after The Food Programme's first presenter, this award recognises ‘unsung heroes, whose work has increased our access to, and knowledge and appreciation of, good food’ and the nomination recognises the efforts the Partnership has made in reaching out through schools to give communities access to seasonal, local and organic food, and in developing the skills needed for more people to cook and grow fresh food.

This is just one of a number of nominations for the organic movement. Andrew Whitely, the founder of organic bakers The Village Bakery, and co-founder of the Real Bread Campaign has also been nominated for the Derek Cooper, while Soil Association licensee Adrian Dolby from Barrington Park has been nominated for the Farmer of the Year award. Meanwhile Libby Lewis, the cook and catering manager at Food for Life Partnership Silver school Farley Hill Primary, and a member of the Food for Life Partnership’s cooks’ network has been nominated for best ‘dinner lady’/public caterer.

In total, nine of the 27 nominees have strong links to the organic movement, demonstrating the success it is having in producing high-quality food and inspiring change across the country. The Soil Association would like to say congratulations to all the organic heroes nominated, as well as all those other fantastic producers and businesses who weren’t this time.
