Save our Soils
“The health of soil, plant, animal and man is one and indivisible.”
Lady Eve Balfour, Soil Association founder
Soil is at the heart and soul of our planet. Put simply, we couldn’t live without it. Our bodies are built from, and sustained by, the nutrients in our soil. Civilisations rise and fall on how well they treat their soils. Yet despite the fact that healthy soil remains crucial for food production, flood defences and our ability to tackle climate change, we don’t look after it.
Less than one sixth of the land on Earth is suitable for growing crops. But we’ve taken our soil for granted, and now one third of the world’s arable soils are degraded—and 75% of that is severely degraded.
It can take a thousand years for just one centimetre of topsoil to form, and right now we’re losing the equivalent of 30 football pitches of fertile soil every minute.
The UK countryside only has a hundred harvests left in it. We have to save our soils.
We are committed to increasing the organic matter in our soils (an important measure of soil health) by 20% over the next 20 years. It can be done—but we need your help.
Change the way we farm for good.
Join the Soil Association, and together we can reverse the damage being done to our soils.

We need policymakers to start taking soils seriously, but we can't do this without farmers, gardeners and allotment growers like you, raising the profile of this fundamental issue.Helen Browning CEO
