Fresh opportunities for Scottish suppliers

Scotland Excel launch new PINs

At Food for Life Scotland we’re dedicated to seeing more fantastic Scottish produce make it onto plates in schools across the country. Public sector procurement is a valuable route to market for Scottish producers, and with Scotland Excel recently announcing new procurement plans for fresh fruit and veg and groceries, it’s a great time to find out more.

Meet with the experts

Scotland Excel is the Centre of Procurement Expertise for the local government sector, with 31 local authorities across Scotland using one or more of its frameworks to source food for school meals.

Following the release of new Prior Information Notices (PINs) for fresh fruit and vegetables and groceries frameworks, suppliers have been invited to meet with Scotland Excel in early June to gain an insight into public procurement and discuss the opportunities in more detail with no commitment required.

Focusing on local

More and more councils across Scotland are recognising the value of supporting their local economies and reducing food miles by sourcing local produce for the public plate. Since working with Food for Life, City of Edinburgh Council now source 80% of their fresh meat and fish from Scotland.

Scotland Excel too have expanded their support for Scottish producers in recent years, introducing ‘supply only’ elements to allow smaller businesses to participate, and increasing Scottish produce available on existing frameworks by using Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) such as Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb.

An opportunity to engage

Prior Information Notices to both Fresh Fruit and Vegetables (1019) and Groceries & Provisions (1219) have now been published on Public Contracts Scotland (PCS).

Scotland Excel are arranging individual supplier meetings in June to discuss the frameworks and understand the current marketplace better. Meetings for the Fresh Fruit & Vegetables framework will be held in the week commencing 3rd June, and the Groceries and Provisions framework in the week commencing 10th June, although meeting requests outside of these dates can be easily accommodated until the tender process is live.

Scotland Excel are currently exploring the potential of a supply only element for the Grocery and Provisions tender, and geographical lotting for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetables tender, so local suppliers, manufacturers and producers have been encouraged to get in touch in addition to larger suppliers and wholesalers.
