70th Anniversary Appeal
A message from our CEO, Helen Browning -
There are so many issues that we need to be concerned about today and so many worthwhile causes you could support. In these pages, we hope to show that if you, like us, believe that good food and good farming are the bedrock of a thriving civilisation, then helping the Soil Association is so important right now.
As a result of the EU referendum, our country is undergoing a seismic shift. This brings huge threats, but also the biggest opportunity for decades to shape the future of food, farming and the countryside.
Food is fundamental to all our lives. Good food keeps us well, provides such pleasure and sustains society. It employs so many of us and is a major part of our economic life. If we grow good food well, it can nurture our countryside too.
But food has become a problem. This isn’t anybody’s fault. It’s just what happens when something is so big, so all pervasive, that no one feels it’s their job to keep it on track. Our runaway food system is making us unhealthy, as we eat too much over processed junk. And the way we grow that food has destroyed and degraded so many other species, undermined our vitally important soils and abused farm animals. Farming today is totally dependent on fossil fuels and is a major cause of climate change. Farmers themselves are struggling to survive, as prices are driven down. Our cheap food starts to look very expensive!
The Soil Association is the only UK charity which works across the whole spectrum of food issues. Our organic values mean we care about human health, nature, soil, water, forests and animal welfare which gives us a unique and unifying voice. We bring together farmers and scientists, doctors and school dinner ladies, chefs and foresters, to find, test and promote the solutions that the world needs now.
We can go to politicians with our partners and demand a farming policy to replace the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) that puts the nation’s health at its heart. One that feeds people well, that supports farmers to use less or no pesticides and antibiotics, to give farm animals a good life and incentivises them to produce the crops we need, while revitalising soils and enhancing our countryside.
In this, our 70th year, we have such an opportunity to drive change. We have many solutions to offer, the knowledge and experience to show a new way forward. A future where organic principles are the norm, not the exception is a real possibility, and with your support, that possibility could become a reality. Please, if you can, do pledge now and join forces with us at this extraordinary moment in history.
