Visit an organic farm

Torr Organic Farm, Dumfries & Galloway

Torr is a 335 hectare farm on the Solway coast about 20 miles west of Dumfries. It has been fully organic since 2002. Torr is in a beautiful location, overlooking the Solway and Cumbrian coasts, with Screel and Bengairn hills forming a backdrop.

Livestock, crops and woodland

There are 150 dairy cows, mainly Holstein-Fresian but increasingly mixed breeds including Montbelliarde and Ayreshire. 50 hectacres of cereals are grown and 80-100beef cattle are fattened avery year. There is also 50 hectares of woodland which is not registered as organic, but is sensitively managed for timber and leisure.

Landscape

Torr is unique for its variety of landscapes and habitats; from meadow and arable land to hill and woodlands as well as coastal mudflats.

Wildlife

There are two bird hides on the footpath network – look out for kingfishers in the burn, herons, curlews, redshanks and shelduck. Buzzards are seen daily. An RSPB survey identified skylarks, linnets, songthrush as well as summer visitors such as house martins, willow warblers and whitethroats.

Wildflowers include ragged robin, meadow sweet and yellow flag. The woodlands host roe deer and red squirrels, as well as spring flowers such as bluebells, primrose, marsh marigolds and wood anemone. Brown hares can be seen in the fields. The foreshaw is part of the Auchencairn Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest for its bird life such as pinkfoot and barnacle geese in winter and plants such as sea lavender and greater sea spurrey.

Arranging a visit

A path network, which was developed by the local community, links the village of Auchencairn with the farm. The Hugh Paton path starts at the bowling green car park in Auchencairn, or at the car park at Old Torr. It takes you along the coast and through the wood. Visitors are welcome individually or as groups, including school parties. Contact the farm to enquire about group visits.

How to get there

If coming from Kirkcudbright, the farm is to the south of the A711 just after Auchencairn, or before it if coming from Dalbeattie.
