Visit an organic farm

Wester Lawrenceton, Moray

Wester Lawrenceton is a 24 hectare (ha) mixed organic farm (with a further 12 ha in conversion) overlooking the Moray Firth to the mountains of Sutherland beyond.

Livestock

Pam and Nick Rodway make organic cheese with milk from the farm’s small herd of Ayrshire cattle. They keep a flock of Gotland sheep for their high quality wool. The farm has 350 laying hens that live in small portable chicken houses, moving to fresh pasture regularly.

Conservation

The farm is in an important area for wildlife including red squirrels, curlews, oystercatchers, hares and buzzards. The farm has planted some two ha of woodland and a hedgerow. Meadowsweet, harebell and dog rose cover the banks of the little burn (stream) - nurturing spiders, beetles and butterflies. Hay making waits until after the first week in July to allow fledging ground nesting birds to leave the nests.

Marketing

Wester Lawrenceton demonstrates the importance of adding value to its produce, especially through on-farm cheese making. Other added-value products include oatcakes, haggis, sausages and wool - all processed locally. The farm sells its produce through farmers' markets, local specialist shops and further afield. The Rodways have also established a novel 'cow sharers' scheme, where local people invest in the dairy herd in return for dairy produce.

Visits

Wester Lawrenceton is happy to host farm walks and talks for groups throughout the year. Cheese making and other courses are available. Please contact the farm to find out more.
