Hours: Full time, 37.5 per week
Location: Bristol or home-based (UK only) with regular and flexible travel (up to 10 days a month) required throughout the UK (home-working initially due to COVID-19).

Food for Life (FFL) is an exciting and fast-growing programme that bring schools, nurseries, hospitals and care homes, and their surrounding communities, together around the core ethos of healthy, tasty and sustainable food.

Our programme is about making good food the easy choice for everyone – making healthy, tasty and sustainable meals the norm for all to enjoy, reconnecting people with where their food comes from, teaching them how it’s grown and cooked, and championing the importance of well-sourced ingredients.

We work with schools, nurseries, hospitals and care homes, helping them build knowledge and skills through a ‘whole setting approach’. This engages children and parents, staff, patients and visitors, caterers, carers and the wider community to create a powerful voice for long-term change.

About the opportunity

This is a unique opportunity to help shape and lead our Business Development Team for Food For Life, this role comes at an exciting time in the development of our new and ambitious ten year strategy at The Soil Association and we are looking for someone to develop and secure our portfolio of income generation to ensure a sustainable future for the Food For Life Programme and meets its ambitions for impact on Climate, Nature and Health.

Your role

As our Head of Business Development, you will work throughout the UK across a range of programmes and products to generate a portfolio of earned income for the Food For Life programme , including the management of public sector commissions and Food for Life Served Here accredited schemes.

This is a busy, fast paced role, which requires an innovative mindset, to help shape and position our approach to income generation. You will enjoy building relationships, spotting opportunities and managing a small, dynamic team to deliver a sustainable business model for the FFL programme.

About you

You’ll thrive in this role if you are an innovative business developer, commercially-minded and committed to making a difference in the world. We are looking for a passionate leader, with the following skills and experience to make a real impact:

  • Proven experience of managing 6 figure cost budgets and achieving commercial outcomes

  • Experience managing and motivating a team

  • Experienced relationship builder across multiple stakeholder types

  • Substantial experience of delivering and reporting in a multi-agency partnership, preferably in education, community development or public health.

  • Substantial programme development experience across multiple range of settings and sectors

  • Proven track record of securing relationships and income from public, private and charity sectors, with track record of delivering 7 figure sum income portfolios

  • Bid/tender writing with demonstrable success rate

  • Experience of successfully positioning programmes as a means to help stakeholders/other organisations achieve their targets

  • Sound knowledge of programme delivery mechanisms and the results of the evaluation
