Change to Soil Association new packaging standards deadline
In March 2024 Soil Association published new packaging standards.
The new requirements come into force in September 2025. Products packaged from that date must use packaging compliant with the new standards. Products packaged before that deadline can be sold until stocks are exhausted.
We have received feedback from organic businesses on the challenges in meeting this deadline, in particular where they have existing packaging stock that will not be used before the September 2025 deadline. For example, some businesses have existing packaging stock that will last 2-3 years.
Soil Association does not wish to see existing packaging stock disposed of where it does not comply within the deadline and so has agreed an amendment to the implementation period as follows:
packaging stock purchased prior to September 2025 may be used until stocks are exhausted
all packaging ordered from September 2025 must be compliant with the new standards
