Use of E223 Sodium Metabisulphite, E224 Potassium Metabisulphite and Sulphur Dioxide E220 in organic cider, beer and wines

A reminder to producers of cider, perry, beers and wines.

1. Organic regulations do not permit the addition of Sodium Metabisulphite E223 to organic cider, perry, beers and wines.

GB and EU organic regulations permit its use only for crustaceans, and in no other circumstances. SA higher standards do not permit its use at all.

As an alternative, the organic regulation permits use of E224 Potassium metabisulphite or E220 sulphur dioxide in organic cider, perry, mead, fruit wines and wine made from grapes. We cannot give permission for use of Sodium Metabisulphite E223.

Only additives and processing aids listed in the standards may be used.

 

 

2. Ensure sulphur dioxide levels do not exceed the limits set out in the standards if you are adding potassium metabisulphite E224 or sulphur dioxide E220.

When applying to add new products to your licence you will need to confirm sulphur dioxide levels in the product.

You will need to demonstrate at inspection that the sulphur dioxide levels in your products do not exceed the permitted levels.
