Soil Association organic farmed salmon consultation

Soil Association organic farmed salmon consultation

The Soil Association has conducted an extensive review into the welfare needs and environmental impacts of farmed salmon, and is now consulting on the proposals. This consultation sets the scope for standards-led approaches, it is limited to organic aquaculture operations with specific focus on farmed salmon.

The consultation is organised into five sections which introduce proposals to:

  • tackle mortality rates in organic farmed salmon

  • reduce the impact of medicinal treatments on the wider marine environment

  • develop welfare outcome assessments to support delivery of a good life for farmed salmon

  • enhance the sustainability of organic aquaculture feed

  • minimise potential environmental impacts associated with organic farmed salmon sites.

This consultation will run from 15 January to 15 March 2026, it is open to anyone and we welcome all perspectives and feedback.

Respond to the consultation.
