Inspection guidance
What to expect during your farm inspection
During a farm inspection there are certain records, documents and processes that the inspector will need to see. There is also guidance on completing the Action Summary Form (ASF) [58KB] which details any issues identified at the inspection that require attention.
- Information required at processor inspection [DOC 174KB]
- Information required at producer inspection [DOC 199KB]
We inspect our certified farms once a year. However, by law, Soil Association Certification can visit your farm and carry out an inspection at any reasonable time, with or without notice, so keeping your documents up to date is an important part of maintaining your organic certification.
The inspectors are usually very knowledgeable, as was the case with Paul, and it is always a good opportunity to discuss any concerns and glean some advice. We spent nearly two hours outside in the garden, the greenhouse and the polytunnels. Paul also looked at where we pack our boxes, and examined our packaging and our cleaning schedule, before we moved into the office to check out the paperwork.

We try to make our inspections as friendly as possible, whilst addressing any potential issues that might arise during our visit. We appreciate that inspection day can feel daunting, so try to make sure that it is as helpful and informative as possible.
The inspector really understood the requirements and challenges of organic management. They were non-judgemental in their approach and helpful where necessary. Nevertheless, they did praise our efforts and innovations, and equally reminded us of shortfallings or additional input where required. A thoroughly positive, rewarding experience for a year of hard work.
