Chitcombe Farm, Somerset
Sam is the second generation of his family to farm at Chitcombe and was born and grew up here. It is very much a working family farm and Sam’s parents, Edwin and Jenny, farm with him in partnership.
At 1100 feet above sea level on the edge of Exmoor in the Brendon Hills, spring arrives later and the grass grows slower than lower lying farms. The top soil is shillet based and shallow which means careful management of the 98 acres is needed to finish the cattle and sheep.
The old tractor shed and workshop have recently been converted into beautiful, affordable bunkhouses so you can now come and stay and share something of the farm and the wonderful surrounding countryside. We have installed solar PV panels and a biomass boiler, fed with wood from the farm, providing electricity and central heating to both the bunkhouses and the farmhouse.
Chitcombe Farm has been organic for over 50 years. It was originally farmed by organic pioneer Hugh Flatt and his wife Doris.
As a three generation tenancy, Sam hopes one day to pass on the running of the farm to his children.
