Call to action: Help secure fairer labelling for organic and higher-welfare farming
In May 2024, Defra consulted on introducing mandatory Method of Production (MOP) labelling for animal products in the UK.
The proposals aimed to create a clear, tiered system to show how animals are reared – helping shoppers make informed choices and supporting higher welfare farming. The consultation proposals received strong public and stakeholder support, but the Government has yet to act.
For organic farmers, the stakes are high. Without mandatory MOP labels, misleading or unclear claims from lower-welfare systems can undercut genuine higher welfare production. A clear, consistent label would help level the playing field, highlight organic's true value, and strengthen trust and demand in the market.
In The Netherlands ‘Better Leven Keurmerk’ labelling has been adopted by retailers such as Albert Heijn. This voluntary labelling makes the difference between organic and other systems much clearer, helping to reinforce organic’s point of difference. Mandating this approach in the UK would be a significant step forward.
Now is the time to make your voice heard. As an organic stakeholder, you have a powerful perspective on why this scheme matters. Write to your MP today to urge them to introduce mandatory MOP labelling without delay. You can use our template letter – we strongly encourage you to edit it or write your own to reflect your experience, insight, and the difference clear labelling would make for your business and the wider sector.
