FSC controlled wood
FSC controlled wood is material from acceptable sources that can be mixed with FSC-certified material in products that carry the FSC Mix label.
In manufacturing, there may not be enough Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified wood available to meet demand. Because of this, the FSC allows businesses use controlled wood for up to 30% of a finished product.
This helps to address problems like illegal logging, human and traditional rights violation, and deforestation. Organisations using controlled wood must also use risk assessments in order to mitigate the possibility of wood from unacceptable sources entering the supply chain.
Unacceptable sources of wood
FSC controlled wood lowers the risk of including materials from unacceptable sources into FSC Mix labelled products. Controlled wood must not be:
illegally harvested
harvested in violation of traditional and human rights (for example forced or child labour)
harvested in forests in which management activities threaten High Conservation Values (HCVs)
harvested in forests which are being converted to plantations or non-forest use
from forests in which genetically modified (GM) trees are planted
Products containing FSC controlled wood can display the FSC Mix label, which shows that the product is made with a mix of materials from FSC-certified sources, recycled sources, and/or FSC controlled wood.
